Copyright Law

Ok Ive had it with all this bullshit copyright laws, Digital Rights Management bullshit and copyright protections. Enough is bloody enough. Let me tell you my story today:

I have bought a movie for my cousin for Christmas. Unfortunately he lives in the US and of course our region 4 DVD's wont work in his region 1 Player luckily for us some smart chaps have come up with "DVD shrink" (look it up in google and don't pay any money for it cause it is free). So because he is technically illiterate i have to Burn his movie to a blank DVD so that he can watch it in the US. When he is here he can watch the original! Now what i did was illegal because of the DCMA or something similar our pathetic Australian government signed while in bed with the USA who is in bed with the large recording studios. But I consider this fair use.

Let me also say that technically i am a pirate when it comes to music. I hear a song on the radio and i go download it if i like it. That is pretty much straight forward piracy and yes im a guilty as sin however who lost because of me? I would never have bought the song anyway as I rarely get albums. If I like a particular artist enough I will buy their album so it probably benefits them having me listen to a couple of their tracks. Infact if i like their song from the radio so much i wil probably download some of their other songs and perhaps if i like those too I will buy their album.... would i have done this before?? If i like thir song I may even go see them play! Now as far as I know and you can check this for me out of a $20 cd how much does the artist get? now if i pay $100 for a ticket to the concert how much does the artist get? If I get my girlfriend a $100 ticket and maybe even buy a $50 t-shirt at the concert how much does the artist get? Now if i share my downloaded music with friends and they go to the concert how much do they get?

See the way i see it to sell something that physically costs nothing and has no experience attached to it for an overpriced amount of $20 - $30 dollars you are bound to be ripped of left right and center. If CD's were however $10 I would have no problem buying them regularly because the jacket and CD is worth just that and no more.

Movies are a different story. I love going to the movies I will pay $9 to see a movie and do almost every week because it is cheap hey it is so cheap ill even buy their overpriced popcorn and large drink. GF and I can go to the movies for $30 which is a cheap night out. We can even rent (Try renting a Music CD) a movie for $5 (or even $1 on Tuesdays if we want to scramble for the good movies on dole bludger day). So yes the movie industry is doing fine from our house because it sells an experience at the movies and rents its self cheaply at video stores. Hell Like i said i even bought my cousins favorite movie for $30.

The difference is the experience! If music artists knew what was good for them they would put on a show.

My message to the music artists:

Do the gig, sell your merchandise, sell and autographed CD at the gig and make all the money... just don't be offended if we share your music with others.. all we are doing is making you popular.
